Got Teeth? Get Checked
2015 was a big year for Open Door’s oral health services. A new site opened in Brewster, and the new dental van began operations in the Port Chester schools. We recently sat down with Open Door’s Director of Dentistry, Janet Bozzone, DMD, MPH, FAGD (featured left) to hear more about her highlights from the year – and what’s on the horizon.
The new site in Brewster has been busy ever since the doors first opened in July. How did you get the word out?
Busy is right! We’re fully booked pretty much every day. We did outreach to our existing medical patients – both in person, through phone calls, and a SMS texting campaign. The fact that we could coordinate outreach across our primary health services was important, because when your physician tells you “go to the dentist,” that means a lot.
Opening Doors to...Advocacy
2016 has brought a number of important developments in our work to provide accessible, affordable, high quality health care. With the year-end passage of the federal budget in Washington, I’m pleased to share that our advocacy efforts have yielded important results. The new budget will extend funding to federally qualified community health centers for an additional two years.
Through this appropriation, a message has been sent: that Open Door and federally qualified community health centers offer a critical model of expanded services, cost containment, and improved health standards and outcomes.
Donor Spotlight: Joyce Rheingold
Why I give to Open Door:
“I believe that if you can give back, you should. It was the mothers and children who first drew me to Open Door. People with limited financial means can always count on Open Door to give them the highest quality medical care, and they are treated with respect and kindness. Open Door is an important model of how prevention and education can help create healthier communities. When you support Open Door you know you are helping the people in your community who really need it.”
It’s Hip to Be Square
Open Door’s Hoedown fundraiser was a kick-up-your-heels success! The dance floor was stretched to capacity as we welcomed our supporters to Brynwood Country Club in Armonk, NY, and honored former Foundation Board Member Joyce Rheingold. The band Love Canon drove up from Virginia to get us on our feet.
The event supported Open Door’s Patient Advocacy and Wellness programs, which help patients like Silvia, who so poignantly shared her story at the event:
“I was 47 years old, without insurance, and discovered that I had a small cyst on my breast. After making an appointment at Open Door, I learned I had cancer."

Celebrating our 10th Anniversary House Tour
This year, Open Door will mark the 10th anniversary of our house tour event.
With the help of warm and welcoming volunteers, we have brought the mission of Open Door to more than 2,000 people during tours of 60 homes – from Ardsley-on-Hudson to Briarcliff Manor.
Better to Give Than to Receive
Christmas came early at each of Open Door’s five locations, when more than 2,000 children received a special present from Santa.
As part of our holiday drive, toys were donated by generous individuals and Open Door’s outstanding corporate and community partners – including local schools, businesses, and faith-based organizations.
Open Door’s Corporate Giving Program
This year IBM, McGraw-Hill, and Kohl’s donated toys and their time to support our holiday drive. Corporate volunteers have taken part in other Open Door events throughout the year too. If you know a corporate giving program that would be a good fit for Open Door, email Martina Persson at email@example.com.
