At Open Door, the New Year is a time to reflect on our work and mission. Through the “Open Door Effect,” we work to improve the health and well-beingof individuals, which, in turn, benefits the local community.
Open Door is a leader in a number of positive trends in health care. With an increasing focus on preventive care and incentives for preventing unnecessary and avoidable hospital admissions, we help people identify illnesses early and decrease the need for more expensive treatment down the road.
Open Door’s Outreach & Enrollment team continues to make quality, affordable health insurance a reality. December was one of our most successful months, with a total of 253 people enrolled in various health insurance plans offered through the NY State of Health Marketplace including Medicaid, Child Health Plus, Qualified Health Plans, and dental plans. In total, we assisted more than 6,000 people and successfully enrolled 2,033 people from the last enrollment period through the end of 2014.
We had a wonderful time in December at “David Yurman Gives Back to Open Door” with our very special co-host, Emmy Award-winning news anchor Lisa Salvadorini of News 12 Westchester. Friends old and new came out to shop, sip champagne, try on and buy beautiful David Yurman jewelry, and also support Open Door. Ten percent of the evening’s proceeds were donated to Open Door.
Visiting one of Open Door’s Santa Days has become an eagerly anticipated holiday tradition in each of the five communities we serve. We want to be sure that each child receives a brand new gift for the holidays and gets a chance to sit on Santa’s lap. This year, Santa and his elves visited Open Door’s locations in Ossining, Port Chester, Mount Kisco, Sleepy Hollow, and Brewster to give out almost 2,000 beautifully wrapped gifts.
Our Reach Out and Read program is in need of gently used or new board books for babies and toddlers. While volunteers read to children in all of our waiting rooms and give them books to bring home, our providers also talk about the importance of reading and give books to children during their Well Visits – which promotes a lifelong love of reading. Last year we gave out over 11,000 books through this program. If you would like to donate children’s board and picture books and if you are interested in volunteering to be a Reach Out and Read reader in Ossining, Mt. Kisco, Sleepy Hollow, Port Chester or Brewster, please contact Alicia Ward at firstname.lastname@example.org or (914) 502-1468.
Open Door, the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the National Football League (NFL) make quite a team. The collaboration between Open Door’s Patient Advocate program, the ACS’ Community Health Advocates implementing Nationwide Grants for Empowerment and Equity (CHANGE) program, and the NFL’s A Crucial Catch: Annual Screening Saves Lives” initiative, sought to increase screening rates and reduce cancer disparities at a time when minorities and the uninsured are more likely to develop and die from cancer.
New School Based Health Center
Opens in Ossining
School Based Health Centers are doctor’s offices in schools, providing primary health care services where and when students need it, reducing health-related absences and giving support to succeed in the classroom.
We kicked off the 2014–15 school year by opening a brand new School Based Health Center in Ossining High School.
Our dental department is stylin’ with a new set of wheels in Port Chester!
