Our History
Founded in 1972 in the basement of the First Baptist Church in Ossining, Open Door was first operated as a free clinic, staffed by nearly 100 local volunteers. Today a professional staff of more than 60 deliver quality health care at our four health centers in Port Chester, Ossining, Mount Kisco, Sleepy Hollow and our four school based health centers in Port Chester.
Demographics
In 2008...
- Nearly 40,000 individuals were treated at Open Door Family Medical Centers for a total of 178,000 patient visits.
- Over 12,500 children visited Open Door Family Medical Centers representing a 39% increase over 2007.
- 1031 expectant mothers received pre-natal care and treatment at Open Door.
- Outreach and education efforts aimed at eradicating the health disparities that exist for low-income and minority groups reached over 20,000 people.
- Over 98% of our patients have incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.
- 54% of our patients have no health insurance of any kind.
Clinical Highlights
- 92% of our two-year-olds are up to date with their immunizations. This is well above the national average.
- Our WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program has a 91% breastfeeding initiation rate which is the thrid higest in New York State.
- Our WIC Program has the second highest redemption rate of Farmers' Market checks in New York State.
- Over a third of the AIDS patients in central Westchester receive care at our facilities.
Open Door participates in a prestigious national collaborative to establish best practices for the care and treatment of diabetes, a disease of epidemic proportions among our patients.
Recognition for Excellence
- In 2009 Open Door received $650,000 in stimulus funding for retaining and creating jobs and an additional $1,300,000 for facility improvement and health information technology.
- In 2008 we received a research grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to analyze whether electronic medical records embedded with "decision supports" can improve the care of patients with high blood pressure.
- In 2007 Open Door received full accreditation from the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Organizations - the leading accreditation organization in its field.
- In 2007 Open Door purchased and implemented use of eClinical Works, a new unified system for electronic medical records, practice management and document management.
- In 2006 we received Honorable Mention from the New York State Department of Health's Patient Safety Program.
- In 2005 we were recognized by New York State Department of Health for having the best immunization rates in the State.
- In 2005 we were one of just four health centers in the nation invited to participate in a demonstration project to develop models of planned cancer screening services.
- In 2002 New York State Department of Health recognized Open Door for outstanding outreach efforts for women, infants, and children.
- In 1997 Open Door's cost-effective care of Medicaid patients was cited in a national medical journal as a way to reduce government spending for medical services.

Physicians at Open Door Family Medical Centers have admitting privileges at the Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco and Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, White Plains Hospital Center and faculty appointments at New York Medical College, a teaching facility in Valhalla.
